The Inspector General
Produced at the American Repertory Theater Institute
Directed By Manfred Kunhert
The play The Inspector General, by Nikolai Gogol, communicates to the audience how people will subvert themselves to gain money, importance, or favors.
I based my concept for The Inspector General on a funhouse mirror. The characters, at first, were seen in a realistic light.
As the plot progressed the characters began to look increasingly surreal until, at the height of the hypocrisy, they looked to be clowns lit in bright colors from unrealistic angles.
As a basis for my research I used comic book art to determine the color and two dimensional flatness of the characters.
